Money is Power



I'm attending an entrepreneurship class this term. I didn't join it to start a business or work in the business industry. My reason for taking this class is more for researching the topic than anything else. Although I do ravish in the idea of working for myself (which the main reason I don't, and never had, a job) I don't plan on having a business of my own. I might change my mind later, but right now I have no interest in such goals. My main focus right now is understanding the mind of a businessman. I want to know what kind of person it takes to start, manage, and lead a business as well what kind of people have been unsuccessful in a business and why. I want to know how a business starts, how it expands, how it evolves, and when do you know that your business has accomplished your dreams and when it's done the complete opposite. I want to learn about the cons and pros of the world of business. What makes it so harsh? What effect does a business have on the lives of others? Are businesses really for the good of mankind? What businesses help the population and which ones are not? I want to understand all these things and have all my questions be answered.

  1. I watched the movie/ documentary Startup.Com again in my entrepreneurship class. This time around I tried to focus mainly on the process the founders of GovWorks, Tom and Kaliel, had gone through to create their business. There were a lot of things they did that related a lot to what we’ve talked about in class so far. For example, Tom and Kaliel had to first come up with an idea for their business that they felt was “unique” and “different” from other businesses. Then they had to come up with a business plan for how they wanted to start the business and how they plan to make it a success. We saw them pitch their business to potential investors so that they could collect enough money to hire employees, advertise their business, and build it up. We saw the investors nail them with all sorts of tough questions, some of which Tom and Kaliel answered differently to, which made me note that one of their major problems was that they needed to get on the same page if they wanted anyone to take them seriously, which Kaliel tried to do with Tom many times. We also saw what kind of people it takes to run the business and what kind of people could ruin the business. In this case, Kaliel was putting everything into this business, which was great. Tom put his personal life before the business, and because of this their business was slightly in danger and he had to get fired. It was really inspirational for me.

I’ve been assigned to come up with three business ideas for my entrepreneurship course for which I will chose and expand on one I like in particular and use it to undergo the process of making it a “potential” business. I already have my three ideas and have chosen my favorite of the three. My first idea is starting a babysitting business because I LOVE kids and am slightly childish myself. My second Idea was starting a fortune telling business. I actually originally wanted to use this idea, even though I myself have no such “psychic” ability, because it’s fun, I can hire people who actually know how to read the future, and there aren’t very many of them in the US, atleast I don’t think there is. But I changed my mind is because there aren’t very many of them in the states. Why? Because it means that they aren’t popular here. Only people who believe in such things would come. I’ll barely have customers for such a business. So I decided to take this idea and evolve into something that would be more beneficial to others as my third idea. My third idea is about starting my own business as a consultant for the criminal justice people. It is a thing and each consultant agency has a unique feature that distinguishes them from another. Mine, for example, would be about me attempting to read people’s faces to know if they’re lying, hiding a secret, protecting someone, and so on. It’s like being a walking lie detector.
